Guildford, it has to be said, has never ranked highly among the places that we really really want to visit when we’re not busy with promotional video production. Not that there’s anything wrong with it or it’s a particularly horrible place (it isn’t!), there were just always other places that got us more excited.
This has now changed. Rock Box has arrived and suddenly we are very excited indeed about Guildford.
If you are one of those people who secretly resent the fact that society rules dictate that fooling around on a playground is not appropriate if you’re older than 12 then you will love Rock Box. You will probably also love it if you’re not.
Forget everything you have ever known about climbing and climbing walls and imagine a giant playground instead. It doesn’t even look like a climbing wall – multi coloured columns and odd shapes stretch from the ground 7m into the air, all the way up to the ceiling. Fool proof auto-belay devices, operating in a way similar to seatbelts mean that previous climbing experience is as unnecessary as a climbing partner.
It’s very rare that something fun is good for you, faff-free and doesn’t cost the world and even rarer that it’s something that is equally appealing to all age groups. Rock Box caters for hen parties, stag dos, kids and individual adults. Fitness class groups are also in the pipeline.
We’ve tried it and we’ve loved it. We’ve also made a film about it, for Rock Box’s website and social media use, so if you’re struggling to picture it then have a look. At most shoots, our interviewees are at ground level, but for this one we felt that a cherry picker and jib would be a good way to really bring the essence of Rock Box across.
They say never work with children or animals, but our crew was fully in their element we got some great shots of the kids and the adult group alike.
